“Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy,. . .” (1 Peter 3:13-15a)

Do you think that living the Christian life is tough? The Apostle Peter recognizes that it is indeed so. Thus he urges believers to manifest godly conduct and righteousness in the midst of adversity. Such behavior gives glory to God, for, rather than seeking to do what we think is best for ourselves or that which is favored by the world, we are walking in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. He was wrongly and unjustly persecuted and executed even though He was beyond reproach and had always served others. He loved those who are unlovely. He healed the sick. He encouraged the downtrodden. And so should we all despite the insults and hatred others may manifest toward us and toward our Lord.

This type of Christ-like behavior must involve every aspect of life not just actions but speech and thought as well. If we want to fulfill our calling to preach the gospel to all people, our lives must back up our words. Otherwise the world will label us as hypocrites, and so dismiss our message, dishonor and reject the Lord Jesus. Therefore as we speak of God’s love, mercy and kindness we have to back our words up by manifesting those same qualities tirelessly. Such behavior will glorify God for it shows nonbelievers that Christ indeed has the power to change lives. He is able to uphold those who are suffering. He alone, not the government, academia, or social systems can enable all to live in humility behaving without anger, bitterness, or thoughts of revenge. If we believers behave with honesty, respect and goodness, no one will be able to rightly accuse us of wrongdoing. Even if we are so falsely accused, the Lord is glorified for they did the same to Him. He knows who are the righteous from the false. He will commend and exalt all who suffer in and for His name.
