“For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked.” (2 Corinthians 5:2-3)
We groan in this life. We are uncomfortable. This is evidence that we do not really belong here, that we long for our heavenly home. We long to be clothed with our resurrected body, to be overwhelmed by all the blessings we will enjoy when we stand in the presence of Almighty God.

Being clothed in our heavenly body means we are transformed by taking on our resurrected glorified body. Yet it also means that we are clothed in Christ, enveloped by his nature. Being clothed with Christ is the reason we are clothed with our eternal dwelling place. Our union with Christ in Baptism which symbolizes our union with Him in His death and resurrection is completed in our own resurrection from the dead.

Being clothed with Christ means that we are covered by His righteousness. The groaning we experience is the longing for this righteousness as well as the longing to add to it clothes made of our own good deeds, works of obedience and compassion done in His service, by His command and in His strength.

In addition, the deep longing we feel for that heavenly kingdom is signified by the presence of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is for the present the deposit that guarantees we will receive full payment in the next world. So feeling uncomfortable and ill at ease in this world is what we are prompted to feel by the Holy Spirit living in us. We do not like what we see in the world. We are saddened and hurt by the sins and violence all around us. We should not be ashamed of such feelings, but welcome them as the normal state of the Christian.
