“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.” (Jeremiah 33:14-15, ESV)

The Lord is always ready to answer the sincere and despairing cry of the human heart. He wants to reveal all that he has to say to those reaching out to him. Yet He will not answer the prayers of those who ask with selfishness, greed and insincerity as was the case in Jeremiah’s day with King Zedekiah and the people of Judah. They desired the Lord to deliver them from their afflictions when they called to Him. But the Lord knew their hearts. He knew that they had no intention of serving Him or repenting of their idolatry and unfaithfulness. This is why Jeremiah continued to pronounce God’s wrathful judgment on them while continuing to prophesy the future restoration.

Yet even in the fires of destruction the Lord was with them working out His plan. Yahweh promised that He would restore and vindicate His chosen people. But He would do this in a way they they Jews did not anticipate or desire. He had promised that a descendant of David would rule over all the Israelites for ever. This promise was as sure as His promise to provide day and night faithfully. He had made a series of covenants with the patriarchs, David, and the Levites. His impeccable character demanded that He fulfill His word. For He is not like a man who lies and is hypocritical. He always does with is right and keeps His word. Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promise to David. He is the eternal King and High Priest. The church is the Kingdom of men and women He has redeemed from every nation in fulfillment of the promises He made to Abraham.
