“He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.” (Colossians 1:19-20)

The most popular notion of how the universe, how our world was created is based on what is called the Big Bang Theory. It proposes that 13.7 billion years ago the universe began in a tiny, infinitely hot and dense point called a singularity. This singularity contained not only all the mass and energy that would become everything we see today, but also “space” itself. Supposedly that singularity rapidly expanded, spreading out the energy and space. Virtually all astronomers and theoretical physicists endorse this theory, although some may add that God provided the impetus for the Big Bang or that He or it created this singularity.

The Lord has given us different version of the origin of the universe. This account of the creation is recorded in His Word. The Word of God tells us that God in Christ Jesus created and sustained all things by His Word. In his letter to the Church at Colossi, the apostle Paul affirms this glorious truth. In language that is stirring and emotionally charged, he described the fullness of God in Christ Jesus, eternally existent and unique. He exists apart from mankind and yet lives with His people in the church by His Holy Spirit. Paul affirms the truth that Jesus is truly man and He is also God incarnate who gave His life as an atonement for the sins of man.

And yet the world rejects this great truth, preferring to belittle the Word of God and the Christian faith. The world view puts humans at the center of the universe rather than Christ Himself. The individual determines for himself or herself what is good and bad, right or wrong. Individual choice and individual truth are the sovereign rules. Believers are called to shed the light of God’s truth in the darkness of cultural lies and speculation. We are called to preach the truth of God’s Word He created all things, sustains all things. He knows best how we should live. And He has redeemed us to live with Him forever by the blood of Jesus our Savior.
