“’But from the beginning of creation, “God made them male and female. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.’” (Mark 10:7-9, ESV)

Jesus cited Genesis 2:23-24 to affirm the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman. This is the reason we should accept the Genesis passage as literal. Since Jesus affirmed it, to deny that this story is in fact to call Him a liar. Of course many do that today by engaging in or condoning a whole host of sexually immoral behaviors.

From Jesus’ words we learn that in marriage is between one man and one woman, husband and wife. They become one flesh in permanent bond. The fact that Jesus says it confirms that it is a universal truth, not to be redefined by contemporary cultural ideas and norms. Even though the government, the media, and popular opinion proclaim something opposed to this, and try to force us to accept their view as the norm for all, we Christians must always affirm God’s truth as final. We must do so despite the opposition it will bring our way.
