“. . . Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, ‘This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!’” (Luke 9:33b-35)
During His earthly ministry, Jesus performed many miracles including casting out demons and raising the dead. Now one might say these miracles were great or extraordinary, but the word miracle needs no adjectives to increase its importance or drama. By definition any miracle is beyond ordinary, beyond human ability to perform.
These miracles that Jesus performed were proof of His divinity. The Transfiguration confirmed that as well even though it was witnessed by only three of His apostles. Yet even so, these three did not understand the full meaning of this glorious event. The words they spoke indicated that they equated Jesus with Moses and Elijah. The Lord God had performed miracles through these 2 pious men, so perhaps this is why the three disciples reacted in this way. Yet the fact is that both Moses and Elijah, though mighty men of God, were flawed and sinful, just as all men are.
The voice of the Father proclaimed Jesus as His unique Son. This truth is the core of our faith, the essence of our belief about salvation by faith in Christ. Therefore, what people believe about Jesus is what divides humanity. Those who say they believe in Him must believe that He is Lord God and Savior. Those who reject Him as Lord God and/or Savior really cannot call themselves Christians because Jesus revealed Himself as both. Neither can they who say He was just a good man, just a good philosopher with ideas and thoughts that are on a par with other thinkers and philosophers. He was and is totally unique, both God and man. And if we accept the revelation of Christ then we must follow Him and walk in obedience to His commands. He alone is the means of salvation. There are no compromises or other options.
