O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? 5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, 7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. 9 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
This is amazing Psalm should fill us with ecstasy and awe! It contains some of the most important aspects of worship. Worship is not something we experience, as if it were something that happens to us for our benefit, even though it does benefit us. Worship is ascribing worth to God, telling Him how great He is because of the wonderful things He has done. The focus of all worship is Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He is the center of life, not us.
This Psalm exalts the Lord for the glories of His creation, notably the heavenly bodies, the sun, moon, and stars. When we look at these works as well as the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea we are overwhelmed by the awesome variety and intricate complexity of all He has created. When we look at them we do not see random chance as the evolutionists would have us think. Instead we see a vast, creative, and beautiful mind that made all there is for His purposes.
Although Almighty God created all things as a manifestation of His glory and endless creativity, He also desired to share what He created with mankind to bless each one of us. Though we are flawed and sinful, we human beings are the high point of all His creation, not as exalted as God or the angels but far superior to all animals. One day we will be superior to the angels, as hard as that is to imagine. In the meantime, the Lord has blessed us with stewardship and dominion over all these creatures as well as the whole earth and all that is in it. We should use what He has given to homor Him and bless others with life and peace.
