“While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, ‘Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?’ But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, ‘Do not fear, only believe.’”   (Mark 5:35-36 ESV)

Due to Jesus’ delay healing the nameless woman, things now appear worse for Jairus. The mourners are already at his house. It looks like it’s too late. But it is not so. Jesus removes the mourners. Then He raises the little girl from the dead. When I was a kid I remember seeing a painting of this in our family Bible. The little girl was as white as alabaster and Jesus was holding her hand as she is sitting up. The onlookers stand amazed. How incredible this must have been for all to see, particularly Jairus. He received a great blessing because he decided to trust Jesus.

The lesson here is about trusting God. In the midst of our grief, our fear, our pain, our helplessness, whatever difficulty we are in, we must admit that we are powerless. This applies to any crisis you can think of: the loss of a loved one, a dreadful and debilitating illness, a horrible accident, terrorism, the loss of a job, confrontations with difficult and cruel people. No matter what the problem, small or great, we can turn to Jesus for help.

I can not say that He will take away the problem or change the situation. We can always ask for this without fear or shame. But the answer is up to Him. I do know that He will change us as we pray. He will help us accept the situation and will provide us with the strength and wisdom and comfort to endure and get through. He will take us through the pain and the crisis. And even though in this life we will have no end of suffering and crises and problems, we will have the assurance of peace and victory and rest in eternity for we have placed our trust in Jesus.
